Emsella chair and control unit used for non-invasive pelvic floor muscle stimulation

What Is Emsella?

Emsella uses High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology to stimulate pelvic floor muscle contractions. Its intended use includes rehabilitation of weak pelvic muscles and improvement of neuromuscular control for urinary incontinence.

The treatment takes place while you sit on a specialized chair. No internal probe, incision or anesthesia is required. You remain fully clothed throughout the session.

Emsella is one possible part of pelvic floor care. Your provider may also discuss other options, including pelvic floor physical therapy, guided exercises, bladder training or treatment for an underlying condition.

Benefits of Emsella

Bladder Control and Pelvic Health

For suitable patients, treatment goals may include:

  • Reducing episodes of urinary leakage.
  • Improving control during everyday activities.
  • Strengthening weak pelvic floor muscles.
  • Building confidence when exercising or leaving home.

If urgency, frequent urination or postpartum changes are your main concern, explain them during your consultation. These symptoms do not automatically mean that pelvic floor strengthening is the appropriate treatment.

Your progress can be assessed through practical changes: how often leakage occurs, whether you need pads, and how symptoms affect your daily routine. Individual results vary.

Sexual Wellness and Confidence

Pelvic floor function is one aspect of sexual health. Some patients ask about changes in muscle tone, sensation or confidence during intimacy when discussing pelvic floor treatment.

These concerns deserve an individual assessment. Emsella should not be presented as a guaranteed way to improve orgasm, vaginal tightness or sexual sensation, or as a treatment for every sexual health condition. Pain, discomfort or changes in sexual function may require a different evaluation and care plan.

Who May Be a Candidate?

You may want to discuss Emsella if you experience:

  • Stress urinary incontinence: leakage during activities such as coughing, sneezing, laughing or exercise.
  • Urge urinary incontinence: leakage associated with a sudden urge to urinate.
  • Mixed urinary incontinence: a combination of stress and urge symptoms.
  • Pelvic floor weakness or changes after childbirth.
  • Bladder control concerns associated with aging.

A consultation is required to determine candidacy. Not every urinary symptom is caused by weak pelvic muscles, and strengthening is not the right approach for every pelvic floor problem.

Can Women and Men Receive Emsella?

Emsella is used for urinary incontinence in both women and men. Your provider will review your symptoms, previous treatment and medical history before recommending it.

Postpartum Pelvic Floor Concerns

After childbirth, discuss leakage, pressure, discomfort or other changes with your care team. Timing and treatment suitability depend on your recovery and clinical assessment. Emsella does not replace postpartum follow-up or an individualized rehabilitation plan.

Safety Screening Before Treatment

Tell the office about all implanted devices, metal implants, previous procedures, medications and medical conditions before scheduling treatment.

The manufacturer states that treatment should not be applied to patients with electronic or metal implants. Also disclose pregnancy or possible pregnancy, an IUD, recent surgery and any pelvic symptoms so the provider can apply the device’s full screening instructions.

This is not a complete list of contraindications or precautions. The treating provider must determine whether Emsella is appropriate for you.

What to Expect

1. Consultation

Discuss when your symptoms started, what triggers them and what you hope to improve. Your provider reviews your health history, evaluates candidacy and explains appropriate treatment options.

2. Treatment Session

You sit on the Emsella chair while fully clothed. Treatment lasts approximately 28 minutes. You will feel tingling and pelvic floor muscle contractions.

Tell your provider if you experience pain or uncomfortable sensations. Treatment should be stopped and assessed if uncomfortable pain occurs.

3. Treatment Series and Follow-Up

A typical plan consists of six sessions over approximately three weeks, often scheduled twice weekly. The exact plan is individualized.

Some patients notice changes during the series, while others improve more gradually. Follow-up helps assess your response and whether any further care or maintenance is appropriate.

4. Returning to Your Routine

There is generally no planned downtime. Most patients resume normal daily activities after their session. Follow any individual instructions from your provider.

Can Emsella improve sexual wellness?

Sexual health has many contributing factors. Discuss concerns about pelvic floor function, sensation or intimacy during your consultation. Specific sexual outcomes should not be assumed or guaranteed from Emsella treatment.

Can both women and men receive Emsella?

Yes, the treatment is used for urinary incontinence in women and men. Safety screening and an individual evaluation determine whether it is appropriate for you.

Is there anyone who should not receive Emsella?

Electronic or metal implants can prevent treatment. Pregnancy and other medical circumstances also need to be disclosed during screening. Your provider will use the device’s full contraindications and precautions to determine eligibility.

Not necessarily. Physical therapy can address coordination and other individual pelvic floor needs. Discuss whether it, Emsella or another option is appropriate for your diagnosis.

Is Emsella covered by insurance?
